Applications for the Charity of the Month program will open on Thursday, Feb 1, 2024. In an effort to encourage strong values of philanthropy and community involvement among our students, the Office of Student Life offers the opportunity for students to propose a charity that will receive school-wide support. Each charity will be assigned a month where the Faith Family will be encouraged to contribute to fundraising or collection effort solicited for that month’s charity. All charitable fundraising through this program is student led with student leaders working together with the Director of Student Life. If you would like to submit a charitable organization for consideration of support during the 2024-25 academic year, please complete the Request for Consideration form. Forms are attached. Printed forms are located outside of the Office of Student Life. Requests for consideration must be submitted to the Office of Student Life no later than March 19, 2024. (3/8)

" A Seat at the Table"

Inspired by Langston Hughes's words of I, Too, the theme of our Black History Month is " A Seat at the Table." There will be many events in which students and staff can participate in.

1. Middle School & High School Door Decorating

Decorate your door to showcase influential people of color, past and present, that have made a difference in our society, including music, politics, writers, actors or anyone who has changed our society!! Decorating can begin February 1 through February 15. Winning Class will receive Randy's Donuts!! There will be a winner for Middle School & High School. Teachers have been given information about how to sign up their class in the Monday Memo and Friday Bulletins.

2. A Seat at the Table Speakers

Multicultural Club's First A Seat at the Table will be a series of speaking engagements highlighting the individuals' speakers achievements and community work. Middle School teachers can sign up their 2nd block and high school teachers can sign up their advisory. Parents and staff are also welcome! MostPrep's Winter/Spring 2024 SAT/ACT Classes

FLHS is pleased to announce that MostPrep will be running both SAT courses at FLHS in preparation for the two most popular SAT dates later in the school year and, for the first time at FLHS, an ACT course leading up to the school-based ACT on April 9. You may use this LINK to sign up for a class. There is a limit of 25 students per session, so registrations will be honored on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact MostPrep by e-mail (mostprep@gmail.com) or phone (702-896-1307 -- this is a landline, so please don't send a text!) if you have any questions. Here is a list of course offerings; no student may register for more than 1 course, and these courses are only open to current juniors. FLHS will bill students' accounts for these courses after they begin.

SAT Winter Course, January 31 - March 8: This 6-week course ($700) aims to fully cover the most important content for the new digital SAT, all of which carries over to the ACT. Two proctored practice tests are included. This course will meet on Wednesday nights (7 - 9:30pm) and Friday afternoons (4 - 5:30pm), except for Ash Wednesday; the course will meet on Monday night that week instead. Practice tests will run from 8am - 10:30am on February 24 and March 2, which are the final two Saturdays before the March SAT. MostPrep recommends that students who have multiple AP classes take the March SAT so they can devote the time they need to studying for the AP tests, which they only get one chance to take!

ACT course, February 6 - April 4: This 8-week course ($800) aims to fully cover the most important content for the ACT, including the harder math and the science section, which are both beyond the scope of the SAT. Two proctored practice tests are included. This course will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (7-9pm); the course will not meet over spring break. Practice tests will run from 8am - 11:30am on March 2 and March 23.

SAT Spring Course, March 27 - May 3: This 6-week course ($700) aims to fully cover the most important content for the new digital SAT, all of which carries over to the ACT. Two proctored practice tests are included. This course will meet on Wednesday nights (7 - 9:30pm) and Friday afternoons (4 - 5:30pm), except for Good Friday; the course will meet on Thursday afternoon that week instead. This course will not be meeting over spring break. Practice tests will run from 8am - 10:30am on April 20 and April 27, which are the final two Saturdays before the May SAT.

If you are planning on participating in High School Sports, please complete your Aktivate registration for the 2023/2024 school year ASAP. The website is as follows: aktivate.com

HS Sports Physicals – Please use NEW NIAA Physical forms as of 4/1/23:

You can obtain the most current physical forms/instructions from Crusader Connect, Resources Page, under MS/HS Sports Registration Information.

Aktivate Instructions/NIAA New Physical forms to be used effective 4/1/23

Please do not use the physical forms provided by the doctor’s office. They are usually not current and will be rejected.

--Physicals expire 12 months from the date of the doctor’s signature. –Up to date physicals are required for the 2023/2024 school year. It is recommended to schedule your physical in June or July so it’s good for the whole year.

--All completed physicals must be uploaded into Aktivate for approval. –If your athlete’s physical expires before or during the season, they will not be allowed to try out for a team. Example: Your child is trying out for a fall sport, your previously completed physical was done on 11/10/22. The physical expired as of 11/10/23. It will not be valid for the 2023/2024 Fall season since it expires during the Fall season. A new physical must be obtained before the season in order for your athlete to tryout for their Fall sport.

Yay for Thursday! Yearbook club meets on Thursdays in Mrs. Snodgrass's rm 220 from 3:25-4:45. This is open to 6th grade, 7th grade, and 8th grade.

7^th and 8^th grade working lunch

7th and 8th grade working lunch will be held every Monday and Wednesday. This is a time to work on school work or study for a test, etc. If you would like to attend a working lunch, you must fill out this form ahead of time and bring your own lunch. Students will come to room 501 with their lunch and will stay the entire lunch period. Working lunch is limited to 25 students each lunch.

DEVOTIONS

Today’s Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:16-27

Daily Lectionary: Job 3:11-26; John 1:35-51

For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! …I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. (1 Cor. 9:16,23)

In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The Apostle Paul wants to preach the Gospel. He’s clear on that. But what, specifically, is the Gospel? It has many blessings, for Paul says that in preaching the Gospel he is sharing with other sinners its blessings.

In the Large Catechism, Luther Now, if you are asked, ‘What do you believe in the Second Article [of the Apostles’ Creed] about Jesus Christ?’ answers briefly, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ, God’s true Son, has become my Lord.’ But what does it mean to become Lord? ‘It is this. He has redeemed me from my sin, from the devil, from death, and from all evil.’”

The Gospel is Jesus Christ crucified for the sinner. The Gospel is that by His blood, Jesus has redeemed you from your sin, from the devil, from death, and from all evil. The Gospel is the forgiveness of all sin and the gift of life everlasting.

Paul knew what it meant to be without the Gospel. He had been a Pharisee, a teacher of the Law. To the sinner, the Law is enticing. It teaches what must be done to be holy; it gives you the way to justify yourself. But it is a false path. For by the Law, no one will be made righteous, since we are, after all, sinful. So the Law brings only guilt and shame, even as we try more and more to keep it.

Paul knew this. He had been one of the most accomplished teachers of the Law. No more. Jesus gave Paul the Gospel. He forgave Paul his sin. He called Paul to be His servant to bring sinners into life and salvation not by the Law, but by the Gospel.

This is the Gospel we need to hear every day. As long as we are in sinful flesh, as long as the Law rightly finds us in our guilt, we need to hear the Gospel. The Gospel of Jesus Christ crucified, of the sinner redeemed from sin, from the devil, from death, and from all evil.

The Gospel is Jesus saying to you, “I forgive you all your sin.” In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.

Your Gospel, O Lord, brings me your righteousness, It robes my soul in royal dress;

From all my guilt it brings release, And gives my troubled conscience peace.

May I in faith your Gospel confess, And praise you Lord, my righteousness. Amen. (paraphrased from “The Gospel shows the Father’s Grace,” LSB 580)
