DEVOTIONAL
And lead us not into temptation. What does this mean? God tempts no one. We pray in this petition that God would guard and keep us so that the devil, the world, and our sinful nature may not deceive us or mislead us into false belief, despair, and other great shame and vice. Although we are attacked by these things, we pray that we may finally overcome them and win the victory. (Small Catechism: Lord’s Prayer, Sixth Petition)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. It’s entirely true that “God tempts no one.” No one but Jesus! After all, Matthew tells us that Jesus was “led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted…” What the catechism is teaching us is that God will not tempt YOU. He will not lead YOU into temptation and conflict and battle with the devil because He has already done that to His Son and Jesus took care of it for you.
Each of the enemies that the catechism tells us are against us, Jesus has defeated. The devil wants to convince you that God’s Word is a lie, and keep you from trusting in Jesus. So Jesus faces the evil one head on, slaps him down with the Word of God, and beats him for you.
The world tries to overcome you. Sway you to its view. Get you to stop believing all that “Jesus stuff” and have a good time while you can. The world wants to overcome you with all sorts of cool temptations that won’t last. So Jesus overcame the world. Acted as if the world was nothing to Him. Obeyed His Father to die for you and rise again. The world doesn’t dictate your future now.
Your sinful flesh would love to go along with the devil and the world. It would, too, except for the perfect flesh of Jesus. Sinless, He bears your sin. Perfect and holy, He is cursed for you, so that by His blood you are sanctified, made holy. Your sinful flesh is crucified with Jesus in your Baptism and the new you in Christ rises to live before God each day in holiness.
These victories of Jesus are yours, and in the Lord’s Prayer, particularly the Sixth Petition, we learn to believe that they are indeed ours for His sake. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
Lead not into temptation, Lord, Where our grim foe and all his horde Would vex our souls on ev’ry hand. Help us resist, help us to stand Firm in the faith, a mighty host, Through comfort of the Holy Ghost. (Our Father, Who From Heaven Above, LSB 766:7)
