DEVOTIONAL
Today’s Reading: Luke 2:41-52
Daily Lectionary: Ezekiel 33:1-20; Romans 3:1-18
And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” (Luke 2:49)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. He has come to oversee His Father’s business. This is the work Jesus is sent to do. He doesn’t come for Himself, but to carry out His Father’s will. Throughout His ministry Jesus shows us that His Father is holy and just, kind and forgiving. He also reveals to us that God condemns sin and every evil. That is why, ultimately, He’s come. By His work as your substitute, Jesus answers to His Father for your sins. That’s the business He’s about. Because of His dying on the cross, your sins can never again drag you from God. You are forgiven. You are washed white in the blood of the Lamb. Now you may stand before God as His glad children and join Jesus in calling Him “Abba, Father.”
Jesus comes to complete His Father’s business—to make straight the Way to Him. Do you want God as your Father? Jesus is the Way. “No man comes to the Father, but by Me” (John 14:6). There’s no other way to the Father. Outside Jesus, God is no one’s Father. The only Father is the Father of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
God is not Father because He created you. Even if you reject Him as your Father He remains your Creator and Judge from whom there is no escape. The Father has only forgiven children. When His forgiveness is rejected, it is replaced by His Word of judgment. But what about those who refuse to believe Jesus is the only way to the Father? As Paul asks, ‘Can the clay vessel answer back to the potter?’ As clay vessels, as His creatures, you have no claim on God, because you are what the Scripture calls “disfigured vessels” (Jeremiah 18:4). And the vessel that He made from clay was disfigured in the hand of the potter. You are sinners. There is no way around your sin. It is there. It makes you guilty before and rejected by God. Only if sin is forgiven is God anything but a dreadful fear. Only through His Son and His cross is God our Father. Jesus is the Way. No man comes to the Father but by the Son, whose finished His Father’s business for you. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
You are the way; through You alone Can we the Father find; In You, O Christ, has God revealed His heart and will and mind. (You Are the Way; through You Alone, LSB 526:1)
