DEVOTIONAL
What does such baptizing with water indicate? It indicates that the Old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. Where is this written? St. Paul writes in Romans, chapter six: “We were therefore buried with Him through Baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.” (The Small Catechism: Baptism, Part 4)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Your Baptism isn’t just something that happened long ago. It is a gift and promise which keeps on giving, which keeps on flowing each day as the Old Adam gets drowned. Your Baptism declares that the sinner in you has no power, and your sins are forgiven. Your baptism declares that you are a new creation, a child of God, perfect in His sight.
The Catechism reminds us to make the sign of the cross and remember our baptism in the morning and at night. The sign of the cross reminds us what happened in our baptism. What Jesus did for you at the cross, dying for your sins, and then rising on Easter—that salvation was given to you at your Baptism.
The sign of the cross is made in the morning to remind you that you are baptized and a child of God. It is like a little prayer which says, “Lord, I am your child through the water and Spirit from above. Let me live today as your child, confident that no matter what, I am redeemed by Jesus. Let me live as one who is a blessing to others. Let me live as one who is baptized!”
The sign of the cross is made again at night to remind you that you are baptized and a forgiven child of God. It is like a little prayer which says, “Lord, I am your child through the water and Spirit from above. Forgive me for whatever I have done wrong today and let me fall asleep confident that my sins are forgiven and I will rise by your care in the morning and rise and live forever on the last day. Let me sleep and die as one who is baptized!”
That’s how the Lord reminds you of His gifts in Baptism every day. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
And thus I live in God contented And die without a thought of fear; My soul has to God’s plans consented, For through His Son my faith is clear. (Once in the Blest Baptismal Waters, LSB 598:3)
