Unified Team defeats Meadows 21-16 in Close Contest

Fitting during the Olympics: A while back, well before any of these players were born, there was something called The Unified Team in the Olympics - athletes from new (again) countries of what used to be the Soviet Union. They came together under one flag and competed as a group. Today was something of a Unified Team for Faith 6th grade girls basketball, as members of both the A and B teams got together to take on The Meadows in a non league game. The Maroon and Gold came out on top to the tune of a 21-16 win.

The goal coming into the day was to try some new things and put people in different roles to give experience in different phases of the game.  Not surprisingly, there were some growing pains.  Faith trailed 4-0 early and it was 6-2 at the end of the first quarter, with the basket coming on a Sami jumper. Bennet did earn her first start of the season and did well in this role.

Faith came out strong in the second quarter, scoring the first five points on a trey by Ava H and a Jillian bucket to take a 7-6 lead. Gianna added a basket and B Team member Heidi got on the board after a perfect pass from Gillian, and it was 11-10 in favor of Faith after the opening dozen minutes.

Tried something completely new in the third quarter, and when we explained it you could see the apprehension, especially in the eyes of B Team member Ava W. That apprehension turned into a quick, very noticeable from the sideline, smile when the ball landed in her hands and she got a steal. The look on her face was one of the highlights of the day, to be sure.  The teams tied in the third stanza overall, as each team got two points.  We did not make a basket from the field during the third quarter, and you know what that means....WE MADE FREE THROWS!!  Brooke and Heidi each made one from the charity stripe, and that officially ends the curse of the free throw line for us this season. We KNOW that we are going to make more now that we have made one!  :-)

It was 13-12 headed in the final quarter, and it was good to be in a close game. B Team member Morgan earned some key 4th quarter minutes and did well. Chloe also played in the final frame, in fact played in four quarters, and is clearly gaining confidence each and every day. The Crusaders took a 17-12 lead on Sami and Jillian hoops before TMS cut it to 17-14 within three minutes, and then was allowed to employ the full court press. Faith did well against the pressure, and got baskets from Sami and Ava sandwiched around a Mustang score, accounting for the 21-16 final.

We had a lot of fun, everyone in attendance got to play, we shared two prayers, some snacks, and as always with this group, some laughs. It was great to be able to meld together and get a win in the process against what will be a playoff team in the RRAC.  It was fun, it was Unified Faith!

The team impoves to 3-2 overall, and has a busy week in store next week. We hope everyone has a happy, safe, and Blessed holiday weekend.

Go Faith!!!
