Crusaders Defeat Guardians 22-14 in Non Conference Tilt

GVCS brought a team of 6th and 7th graders to the Aux Gym, and it what was a hard fought contest the Crusaders came away with a 22-14 victory.  Playing another Christian school is always a blessing, and all the players should be proud of the way they competed hard but did so with a great deal of sportsmanship.  Thanks to Coach Buskirk for leading both teams in prayer at the halfcourt circle before the game began. It was a great way to start.
Dena and Ariana each earned thier first starts of the season today, and did quite well. Ari played the best defense of her Faith career and Dena was a force on the boards, with a career high four caroms despite GVC being the taller team. Both teams played solid defense at the start and the first hoop did not come until the two minute mark when Faith hit a jumper. GVC tied it on a nice drive to the hoop but Faith scored the final three points of the period on a traditional three point play on a drive to the hoop. The Crusaders led 5-2 after six minutes.

We did a very good job on our inbounds plays today, and the first scoring of the second stanza came when Neveah found a wide open Addison and Addie convered the layup to give Faith a 7-2 lead. She did exactly as what we had worked on, and to see it work well was a good thing. The teams traded hoops the rest of the way in the second period, and Faith took a 9-4 lead at the half.

Things started out perfectly for the Crusaders in the 2nd half, as we forced two turnovers on the first two Guardian possessions. Mia W and Danielle combined for the first one, and then Annika single handedly caused the second. Then the five pack of Skylar, Mia B, Addison, Ariana and Neveah took over, playing superb defense and moving the ball around well. Mia FOUGHT her way to a basket, going up strong through the defense and getting a layup to fall. Faith sunk two free throws and then Ari made an absolute PERFECT pass to find an open Neveah for trey, and the look on Ari's face after the play was just great! Faith led 16-8 after three.

Portlynn continued her strong play in the final stanza, and overall the post combo of Portlynn and Skylar combined for seven rebounds, three blocks, three steals, and two assists! We always talk about impacting the game even if not scoring, and those two did a great job of that today!  The teams each put up six points in the final frame, with Faith continuing to work on new things on defense and learning from them. Faith made some excellent passes in the fourth quarter and Mia W hit a nice jumper, which was great to see. Overall Faith scored nine baskets from the field, and we had assists on seven of them!  That is the type of team basketball that we want to see!

With the win, the Crusaders are now 7-1 on the year, 2-1 in league play, and are looking forward to playing Democracy Prep on Friday in a rekindling of a former RRAC rivalry.

Go Crusaders!!!
