Scorpions Win Tough Tussle

Super fun atmophere for the contest at LVDS between the teams that have met in the RRAC Championship Game each of the last two seasons. In a game that featured a little bit of everything, Day School came away with a 21-17 victory.

LVDS jumped out to a 4-0 lead but Faith hit a three to cut it to 4-3 midway through the 1st period. Defenses controlled things from there, as that was the score at the end of the quarter. Mia B did some great work in place of Mia W, who suffered an injury early in the contest. Portlynn did some amazing work on glass in the first quarter, as that was her big time goal today.

Scorpions stary Ayana Watson had an excellent 2nd stanza, tallying six points. The only Crusader points came from the free throw line, with Neveah splitting a pair and Dena hitting both of hers, although the second was taken away due to a lane violation. Ariana did some good work down low on both offense and defense in this stanza.   Day School led 10-5 at the half.

Mia W got back into the game in the third quarter and had two of her team high four steals on the night. She was fouled and split a pair of charity tosses, while Neveah also added a three throw and hit a jumper. Skylar was also a force inside in the 3rd stanza, and also had a steal in what was a nice showing for her to be sure. LVDS got five points and led 15-9 after three quarters.

We talked about staying calm and taking things possession by possession in the break between the quarters, and we did a very good job of that. We started the quarter on an 8-0 run and took a 17-15 lead with about two minutes to go. Dena hit a big trey to bring us closer, and Neveah added sandwiched a free throw between a jumper and a beautiful runner, the latter giving the Crusaders the lead. Annika set up the runner with a steal, and she played some excellent defense all game.

Unfortunately for us, we just could not make any more shots for the remainder of the quarter. We had some looks - thanks to some very aggressive Addison defense - but the shots just would not go down. On the other hand, Day School made two free throws and two shots from the field in the final two minutes to take a 21-17 lead with thirty seconds left.

We played perfect defense against the Scorpions and got the ball back with about 15 seconds left.  We worked for a good shot, but it rimmed in and out.  Mia W got the rebound and got another shot off, but LVDS tipped it, got the rebound, and ran out the clock.

We talked after the game about learning from both the good things we did and the things we can improve upon. With the result, the team is now 6-1 overall and 2-1 in RRAC play.  We will be back to work at practice tommorow and play again on either the 14th or 18th of February.

Go Faith!
