Season Opening Scrimmage a Great Learning Experience
Faith travelled to Dawson for a scrimmage, the first competition for both squads agasint other teams. We had a lot of fun, and there was some excellent basketball played, and of course some things we can learn from. Faith did come out on top on the scoreboard, but learning and development were the keys today.
The first time wearing a Faith uniform usually brings nerves, and we certainly had them today, as the first part of the first quarter was filled with choppy play, from both teams. However, midway through the first stanza Danielle got things going with a nice shot. Neveah added to the tally with a couple of buckets, and the Griffiths (Morgan and Brianna) teamed up for an excellent rebound/pass combo to get Brianna a hoop. Addison played some excellent defense (four steals on the day!) and made a couple of really nice passes along the way.
The defense was strong for the entire half, as we contested shots and did not allow hardly any offensive rebounds from the Lady Bears, as Portlynn and Skylar did excellent work down low on the glass.
We did some experimenting in the 2nd half and had an excellent offensive exchange as Danielle set a screen, Addison came off the screen perfectly, and found an open Annika, who stepped into the shot with confidence and buried the jumper. THAT is what TEAMwork is about, and was great to see. Mia W made a nice driving layup and added another basket in the second half, while Dena made a jumper and Portlynn got a putback for a bucket.
Mia B did some nice work in the latter stages, and Ariana made some excellent decisions with the ball as well. We were also able to get some court time for Sabrina, who is doing an excellent job as our Manager/Statistician and occasional player, and she looked to be having a great time out there as well.
Top Rebounder today was Morgan.
Addison led the way with four steals.
Portlynn's three assists were tops on the team.
Eight Crusaders scored, showing great balance and teamwork.
We look forward to continued development as we get ready for our season opener next week vs Moapa Valley, and a shared practice with the Faith 7/8 B Team on Monday.
