Crusaders Stifle Scorpions Twice - LOCK IN Spot in RRAC Championship Matches
In the first match after Spring Break, both the Boys and the Girls defeated Las Vegas Day School in contests that were very important for the post season hopes of both teams. The Girls won 4-1 over the previously undefeated Scorpions while the Boys played a a dramatic match that ended in a 3-2 Crusaders win. Those results lock in both the Boys and the Girls into the Red Rock Conference Championships next Tuesday! This is the fourth straight year the Boys have played for the title, and the fifth straight time for the Girls, matching the longest streak in conference history.
Faith and LVDS were tied for 1st place in the RRAC in the Girls division coming in, and considering the was the rest of the season had gone for both teams, this would decide the regular season championship and thus which team would host the title tilt next week. This was a very good match and the the final should be another great one. Mia defeated a USTA ranked played 6-4 at first singles, and Summer posted a 6-3 win over another USTA ranked player on the #2 line. Day School did get a win at third singles, meaning the Crusaders needed to get a split of the doubles to get the win. Mission accomplished and more, as Kai/Brooklyn (#1 dubs) and Taylor/Elyssa (#2 dubs) each posted solid victories to account for the 4-1 final in favor of the Crusaders!
The Boys match featured some excellent play, and a little added spice to the rivalry, as two Faith sixth grade starters today were members of the LVDS team last year as 5th graders. Sam controlled things from his #2 singles position to give the Crusaders a 1-0 lead before LVDS tied it up with a win at #1 singles. Faith retook the lead with a doubles win from Zane/Ryan at 2nd dubs, and they posteda 6-2 win. We know we say this every time, but these two picked up rackets for the first time a week before the season, and now they are picking up key wins in a rivalry match. Unreal - kudos to you both.
Faith still needed to win one more match to get the win, and unlike the NHL when the refs can completely change the game with a phantom five minute major penalty (yes, this writer is still a bit bitter!), tennis is in the hands of the players, and this time around things went the way of the Crusaders!
Arnav and Josiah were in a dogfight at #1 doubles while Parker was also in a very tough at #3 singles. Parker was with us as a sixth grader but did not play tennis in 7th grade. We were happy to have him back and he has been a great addition to our lineup at the #3 singles spot. Arnav/Josiah are 7th/6th graders, so it was all three grades that would determine this outcome. Faith needed to win one to win, and both matches were tied at 5-5 at one point. Parker rose to the occasion, winning the last two games of the match to win 7-5, thus sealing the match for Faith. Josiah/Arnav ended up dropping their set 6-7. (6-8 in the breaker) but played quite, quite well.
That wraps up the regular season for the Boys as there is not a Boys B team, and with this result the Boys finish 6-1 during the regular seaon and will travel to The Meadows next Tuesday for the Championship match. The Girls finish up the regular season against the B Team, and regardless of that restul will host LVDS in the championship match as well next Tuesday.
Congrats to all...Go Faith!
