Girls XC Takes Second at Boulder City
The girls and boys country teams competed in the Silver State 3K Saturday, Sept. 19, at
Memorial Park in Boulder City with the girls taking second place and the boys finishing 5th .
Gunderson Middle School won both competitions which featured 21 schools.
Lyla Baumgart and Mary Hanson finished 12th and 13th , respectively, to lead the Crusader
girls. Ayla Lorenz was 27th , Morgan Stelmachowicz was 31st , and Peyton Garcia was 37th out of
161 competitors.
Robert Trares was 5th in the boys race at 11:30.7. Dylan Trares was 32nd , Antonios
Pytikakis was 36th, Maximus Bruni was 66th , and Carter Wada was 77th out of 197 runners.
6th Grade Flag Football Maroon Team defeats Las Vegas Day School, 13-6
The Maroon flag football team started the season 1-0 with a stalwart defensive effort at Day School, topping the Scorpions, 13-6.
With the game on the line, Brady Foppes broke up a deep pass on 4th-and-2 in the final minute, forcing a turnover on downs and giving the Crusaders the ball back, where they took over with just a minute left and successfully kneeled out the clock to secure the win.
In the first half, Ryder Netski came up with a big interception, giving the Crusaders momentum and setting up their first scoring drive, Netski and Sawyer Kofoed then caught consecutive 20-yard passes to move the offense down the field. Gunnar Netski added a 10-yard run before he connected with his twin brother Ryder Netski for a 4-yard touchdown, giving the Crusaders the lead 6-0.
After forcing a 3 and out, on the next drive, Gunnar Netski broke off a 20-yard run. Kofoed made another big play with a 20-yard deep-ball reception and Rone Knox added a 10-yard catch to keep the drive moving before Gunnar Netski finished the drive with a 5-yard rushing touchdown. Offensive lineman Sebastian Flores then caught the 1-point conversion, making the score 13-0.
“For our first game, I was satisfied with the way we played, especially against a long-time rival like LVDS,” coach Josh Lee said. “We made some mistakes that we need to clean up, but I was proud of how the team competed and stayed together.”
Matthew Blumberg led the Maroon defense with 3 sacks.
“Our defense really stepped up and made some big plays when we needed them,” Lee said. “There’s still a lot we can improve on, but getting a win is a great way to start the season”
13u Tackle Football defeats the Las Vegas Lights, 16-12
The Crusaders got touchdowns by Brady Kotake and Trevor Hallowell, both thrown by Davis McKay. Coming up big on defense was Dylan Letestu with two fumble recoveries.
Coach Derek Montomery attributed the win to the Crusaders buying into the slogan: "Don't Cheat The Grind"
6th Grade Volleyball (Maroon B Team) downs Dawson
The 6th grade Maroon team won its season opener at Alexander Dawson, sweeping both games by more than 10 points each. Coaches lauded the Crusaders’ communication and passing vs.the Bears.
