DEVOTIONAL
Today’s Reading: Mark 8:27-9:1
Daily Lectionary: Ezekiel 40:1-4; 43:1-12; Romans 8:18-39
Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say that I am?” So they answered, “John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.” Then He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him. (Mark 8:27-30)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. They see and yet don’t see the truth about Jesus. This is why He warns them to say nothing. They would sell Him as the wrong kind of Messiah, for the wrong reasons, to a people who needed a true Redeemer.
All the religions men have invented fail miserably at this, and this includes many Christian denominations, too. This is why, if you involve yourself with these kinds of groups, they will increase your restlessness, in spite of all your efforts and all your straining to set your sinful conscience at rest. There is only One who is able to secure for you this great gift: our beloved LORD Jesus Christ, the eternal Son of God, the universal Savior, who has “cancel[ed] the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This He set aside, nailing it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14), who by His blood purges your evil conscience and substitutes it with a good conscience.
Therefore, no one besides our Savior could offer an invitation such as: “Come unto me, all [you] who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). Everybody who comes to Jesus and trusts Him as their God and Savior is joyfully, comfortably at rest in these last days.
If you rely on Him, trust in Him, and look to Him for your every good, you will dwell in a secure castle—a mighty, impregnable fortress until the Last Day. Nothing and no one that stands next to you can either decrease or increase your rest and comfort or your serenity of soul. Why? Because if your heart and mind are in this Christ, set on Christ alone for your every good, you have already begun eternal life. You already have one foot in the resurrection! In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
Hail, Thou once despised Jesus! Hail, Thou Galilean King! Thou didst suffer to release us; Thou didst free salvation bring. Hail, Thou universal Savior, Bearer of our sin and shame! By Thy merit we find favor: Life is given through Thy name. (Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus, LSB 531:1)
