DEVOTIONAL
Today’s Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6
Daily Lectionary: Ezekiel 1:1-14, 22-28; Romans 1:1-17
For behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, And deep darkness the people; But the Lord will arise over you, And His glory will be seen upon you. (Isaiah 60:2)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The prophet announces that, “His glory will be seen upon you.” In this one short verse God gives you everything that He has to offer you as your God. Everything God has ever promised. Everything He has ever done or will do. Everything He wants you to know about Him. It’s all here in the words of the prophet. But where is this glory seen? At Calvary.
Jesus bloodied. Jesus dead to save you from your sins. Jesus who died in your place. Jesus raised up from the dead on the third day. Jesus who frees you from the power of the devil. Jesus loved God the Father perfectly for you. He kept the Commandments perfectly for you. On the cross, He took onto Himself the rage and punishment God intended for you and those who came before you. He did this for all those who hate God and have no regard for His Commandments. Jesus, who cried out at the last, “It is finished!”
It is finished. The question of who God’s “glory” will be seen upon is answered. It’s Jesus stretched out on His cross for you, for all the world to see. He is the One the prophet points toward. He is the One who all of human history tries to ignore—Jesus splayed out in His innocent suffering. He who purchased and won you with His precious blood and death. This man who is your God is the glory of the LORD.
This is the Good News of the Gospel, and it gets even better. This glory is laid on you, too, in Baptism. As St. Paul writes, ”We were buried with Him through Baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life” (Romans 6:4). Therefore, when we talk about God’s glory we mean Jesus. We join with St. Paul who confesses, “God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world” (Galatians 6:14 KJV). In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
Not to us, not unto us be glory, Lord; Not unto us but to Your name be praise; Not unto us but to Your name all honor be giv’n For matchless mercy, forgiveness, and grace. (Not unto Us, LSB 558:1)
