DEVOTIONAL
What is the benefit of this eating and drinking? These words, “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins,” shows us that in the Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words. For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation. (Small Catechism: Sacrament of the Altar, Pt. 3)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Ask your friends what it means to be a Christian and you’ll get lots of answers. “It means trying to live a good life.” “Being a Christian means loving others and helping them.” “It means I go to church and learn stuff about Jesus.” “It means learning to choose the right path over the bad path every day.” You’ll get many answers but one you probably won’t hear is, “Being a Christian means feasting upon the Body and Blood of Jesus.”
Being a Christian is something the Lord has made you. He made you a new creation in Baptism. There you were born again from above. And now that you are a child of God, the Lord does what any good parent does: He feeds you. Not just once or twice, but for your whole life.
All your life you are under assault by sin, death, and the devil. That’s why Jesus not only died for your sins and rose again but now lives in you and you in Him by this holy meal. Against sin, Christ’s Body and Blood delivers the forgiveness of sins. Against death, Christ’s Body and Blood deliver life. Against the devil, Christ’s Body and Blood delivers salvation and rescues you from the evil one. Against whatever can harm you, Christ’s Body and Blood saves and protects you.
Therefore, your Christian life is to receive Christ’s Body and Blood—as often as you can in a faithful church where it is offered (not in churches which teach wrongly about the Sacrament or other parts of God’s Word). As you live your life, striving to love God and your neighbor, and sinning in your attempts, you need the forgiveness, life, and salvation that Christ gives you in His Supper. In fact, just as you need to keep eating your whole life, Christ’s Body and Blood will nourish and sustain you your whole life and even give you gifts beyond this life, for Jesus Himself promises that this holy food means He will raise you up on the Last Day. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
Lord, I believe what You have said; Help me when doubts assail me. Remember that I am but dust, And let my faith not fail me. Your supper in this vale of tears Refreshes me and stills my fears And is my priceless treasure. (Lord Jesus Christ, You Have Prepared, LSB 622:6)
