DEVOTIONAL
Today’s Reading: Jeremiah 23:5-8
Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 9:8-10:11; 1 Peter 5:1-14
In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. (Jeremiah 23:6)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. The Branch of Jesse’s stem. That’s King David’s family tree. Way down the line comes the Branch who is “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Jesus, born of Mary who was of the house of David, betrothed to Joseph, who was also of the house of David. As true God, Jesus is David’s Lord, but as true man, He is of the house of David.
But look at that name! THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. Do you have any righteousness? On your own, no. There’s nothing in you but sin and death. Hating God. Hating your neighbor. Breaking the commandments. Living UN-righteously before God. Not treasuring God’s Word. Not loving and serving others. Wanting everything else but what the Lord gives you. Loving yourself most of all. Definitely no righteousness there.
But do you have any righteousness? What is this Branch called― THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS. That means the Lord is your righteousness. Jesus is your righteousness. His perfect life is your righteousness. His Baptism, in which He took on your sins, is your righteousness. His saving death where He was crowned with thorns is your righteousness. His resurrection from the dead is your righteousness. All that Jesus is and has done is your being right before God―your righteousness.
The Good News of Advent is that the Lord doesn’t leave us wallowing around in our sins trying to get some righteousness on our own. He comes Himself to be our righteousness. And you are saved and dwell securely in Him. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
Thy righteousness, O Christ, Alone can cover me; No righteousness avails Save that which is of Thee. To whom save Thee, Who canst alone For sin atone, Lord, shall I flee? (Thy Works, Not Mine, O Christ, LSB 565:5)
