DEVOTIONAL
Today’s Reading: Isaiah 65:17-25
Daily Lectionary: Daniel 6:1-28; Revelation 22:1-21
For behold, I create a new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. (Isaiah 65:17)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Cars break down. Toys rust or get recycled. Xboxes get the red ring of death. Homes fall into disrepair. Of course, buying a new car or toys or gaming systems or fixing what’s broken is relatively easy. If you’ve got the money or the skill you can get a new one.
But what about creation? How do we fix a world gone mad with sin? Once it was “very good” but now we see creation broken all around us. We see it in ourselves, too. We know weeping, sin, and death. We know the problem. But we don’t know how to fix it. There’s not enough money or skill in the world to repair what we’ve broken.
But there is One who knows how: Jesus Crucified. He knows the one tool needed for that kind of cosmic fix: His holy, precious blood and His innocent suffering and death. For you who live in a broken world, the Creator bore the wrath and punishment of all creation. Christ bled for you. Suffered for you. Died for you.
Behold, Jesus makes all things new. Jesus’ death and resurrection is the beginning of the new creation you long for and so desperately need. But the new creation Isaiah foretold isn’t just some day in the future. It’s already yours, now in Jesus, in Baptism. You are made new and declared “very good” by Christ.
Now, we look forward to the new heaven and new earth where the wolf and the lamb share a bowl of crunchy green grass for breakfast; a new creation where there will be no more nursing homes or funerals, no more abortions or miscarriages, no more bullying or violent shootings at school, no more divorce or broken homes. No more sin. No more death. The former things shall not be remembered. There will be no more hurt or destruction in all my holy mountain, says the Lord, because of the Mt. Calvary He already endured for us. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
O sweet and blessed country, The home of God’s elect! O sweet and blessed country That faithful hearts expect! In mercy, Jesus, bring us To that eternal rest With You and God the Father And Spirit, ever blest. (Jerusalem the Golden, LSB 672:4)
