DEVOTIONAL
Today’s Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Daily Lectionary: Jeremiah 26:1-19; Matthew 26:20-35
For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. (1 Thessalonians 4:16)
In the Name + of Jesus. Amen. Do you remember the story of the widow’s son that the prophet Elisha raised from the dead? Do you remember Jairus’ daughter who had died but Jesus just said she was sleeping and told her to get up? Do you remember the young man of Nain whose funeral Jesus interrupted and raised him from the dead? Do you recall Lazarus who had been dead four days when Jesus called him out of his grave? And, of course, there is Jesus Himself who was dead on Good Friday and alive again on Easter.
The resurrection of Jesus means that sin has been defeated. We know sin is defeated because death has been overcome. Jesus died because of our sins. Our sins caused His death. So His resurrection means the sins are gone. Forgiven. Buried forever in the tomb. They can’t be hauled out to condemn you!
St. Paul tells us that by Baptism, we have died with Jesus and been raised with Him. Jesus says that when we feast upon His flesh and blood, He will live in us and we in Him and He will raise us up on the Last Day.
The simple and clear promise of Jesus is this: Even though you die, you will live. There will come a day when Jesus returns, visible to our eyes in all His glory and majesty. And on that day, you will wake up and come out of your grave. Your body will be raised from the dead and you will live forever.
The world laughs at this belief. We wonder ourselves because we’ve never seen it. But the witnesses saw Jesus alive. And Jesus who is God, has made this promise. It’s as sure and certain as Him saying “Let there be light” or “I forgive you.” Jesus is risen from the dead. And you will rise, too. He says so. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.
He brings me to the portal That leads to bliss untold, Whereon this rhyme immortal Is found in script of gold: “Who there my cross has shared Finds here a crown prepared; Who there with Me has died Shall here be glorified.” (Awake, My Heart, with Gladness, LSB 467:7)
