COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS OPPORTUNITY:
The Nevada affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is looking for Race Volunteers for the upcoming race at the Fremont Street Experience Saturday, May 6, 2017. There are multiple areas where help is needed including set up, tear down, registration, kid’s area, and sponsor booths. There are Race Day Volunteer Orientations on Saturday, April 29th from 10am - 12pm OR Monday, May 1 from 6pm – 8pm. Please email volunteers@komennevada.orgwith questions. Register to volunteer at

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS OPPORTUNITY:
The nursery at Mountain View Lutheran Church and School need help on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday.
They need 2 students for Sunday, April 9th (Palm Sunday) from 8:00am to 11:45am, and 3 kids for Easter Sunday, April 16th, from 7:45am to 11:45am. There will be an adult in the Nursery with the kids. Students can email Irmgart Grimm (igrimm@mvlcs.org) by Friday, April 7th at 4:00pm.
In an effort to encourage strong values of philanthropy and community involvement among our student body, the Faith Lutheran HS Student Leadership Team (SLT) along with the MS Student Council will select 5 charities per academic year that will receive school-wide support. Each charity will be assigned a month (Sept, Oct, Nov/Dec, Jan/Feb, Mar/Apr & May) where the Faith Family will be encouraged to contribute to fundraising or collection efforts solicited for that month’s charity.
High school students who would like to submit an application for consideration to support a charitable organization during the 2017-18 academic year, please contact Mrs. Buuck for an application at buuckj@flhsemail.org. Applications can also be found outside of Mrs. Buuck's Office (Office of Student Life) in the aux gym near room 501. All applications for consideration must be submitted to the Office of Student Life no later than May 12, 2017. (5/12)

In Philippians 4:6, God calls us to pray to Him about anything and everything in all situations. A new prayer group is starting up to dojust that. The group will meet twice a week on Mondays and Fridays in room 112 at 7am, and the sole purpose of the group will be to pray for this school and those in it, this city, this country, and this world. If you are in need of prayer, whether you are a faculty member or a student, you are welcome to come on Monday mornings starting on September 12 and the members of the group will pray for you in person. If you want to request prayer, but not in person, you can send emails to request@flhsemail.org. If you are interested in joining the group and praying for everything under the sun, please contact Hannah Hines by email (hh8604@flhsemail.org) for more information or to confirm your intent to join. Calling All Middle School Artists! The 2nd Annual Juried Middle School Art Show is coming up in May. You can apply to be in it by dropping off your original (not copied) art work for consideration. Entries need to have a label with your full name, grade, and contact information on the back. See Ms. Gilman for details. She will be accepting entries after Spring Break.

Into the Dark Unknown

Fear gripped me, and my bones trembled (v.14).
At the outset of World War II, a man—who would eventually rescue 669 children from Nazi slaughter— helped two Jewish boys secure passage on a train escaping Czechoslovakia. After the war, the boys received a final letter from their parents who had died in a concentration camp.
Here are a few lines: The time has therefore come . . . for us to ask you to become good men. . . . You took a piece of your poor parents’ hearts with you. . . . [You have heard] about the hard fate of all our loved ones. We too will not be spared and will go bravely into the unknown, with the hope that we shall yet see you again when God wills. Don’t forget us, and be good.
We can only imagine the agony the parents experienced as they penned those lines and the boys’ convulsing sorrow as they read them. I have no words to assuage this grief.
I do know, however, that the Bible doesn’t ignore this kind of anguish. In a most distressing narrative, Scripture recounts how Job lost his children, his wealth, and his reputation as a God-fearing man (Job 1:14-19, 22:4-5). His ruin was so immense that when his friends came to visit him, they hardly recognized him (2:12).
Though he endured much confusion and grief, Job refused to turn from his Creator. Although he would “curse the day of his birth,” he would not reject God even when his wife prodded him to do exactly that—to “curse God and die” (2:9). Job believed God was present in the ruins as much as in the blessings (1:21).
Like Job, many of us will face terrible sorrows, but God will be with us even there. We may face hardship and despair, and we may have no answers or consolation. But God is with us, even in the dark unknown (Romans 8:38-39). —Winn Collier
