COURAGEOUS PARENTING

Hey Parents!  Remember the “social norms “survey you completed last fall? The results are in and they reveal very positive traits and choices our students make, and speak positively of the importance of our role influencing their lives.

Understanding Social Norms Theory:

The most visible behavior is the most believed behavior. Visible behaviors are seen as normal- acceptable behaviors. Therefore, they are desirable behaviors in a social group. For example, Students see other students drinking and perceive that that behavior is the norm. Therefore, they increase their drinking to “fit in” to the norm of the group.

What does this mean for parents?

Most people misperceive much of the behavior in their social group. Thus EVERYONE in a given community is a “carrier” of inaccurate information.  This social norms study aims to provide accurate information. Parents can help spread the consistent message, confirmed by survey results, that most Faith Lutheran students are making good choices. We must also be vigilant with our parenting! Continue to assist students with making good decisions via communication, regular monitoring and boundaries.
  • Be an active part of the parent campaign by talking to your child and other FL parents!
