Admissions Policy

Faith Lutheran Jr/Sr High School was created to serve the families of the fourteen Lutheran congregations that now comprise the Lutheran Secondary School Association of Clark County, Nevada, Inc. Academically qualified students from those congregations are guaranteed admission provided they meet all of the application/registration/payment deadlines. Academically qualified students graduating from the elementary schools associated with those congregations (Mt. View, Faith Community, Lamb of God and First Good Shepherd) are also guaranteed enrollment. The Association’s Board of Directors has recognized the long tradition of Cornerstone Christian Academy students continuing their Christian education at Faith, and has granted its students priority enrollment as well.

The mission of the Association includes serving the broader Las Vegas Community. All academically qualified from the community are invited to apply and are accepted as space permits. Because the school values its connection with families, academically qualified siblings of current students are also guaranteed enrollment provided space exists and all application / registration / payment deadlines are met. Parents of these students are required to complete the intent to register form by November 1 of the year prior to enrollment.

Enrollment Process

All students begin the process by completing a registration packet. This includes an application form, pre-interview questionnaire, a church membership verification form (for Association church members), a records request, an Administrator’s Analysis, a Teacher’s Analysis, Parent Financial Responsibility form and a health record. All forms must be completed and returned to Faith prior to an admissions decision. A registration fee must be paid at the time of application. This fee is non-refundable unless Faith does not accept the student prior to August 15.

All incoming students are tested. Faith uses a nationally standardized test to assess student skills in the area of reading comprehension, math problem solving and math procedures (for grades 6-8) and vocabulary, reading comprehension and math (for grades 9-12). A non-refundable testing fee must be paid prior to the test administration. The tests are graded and assigned a stanine score. In order to be academically qualified, students must receive a total of at least 14 stanine points with no individual test scored lower than a three. Students whose IEP or 504 plans call for special accommodations must take the test without any accommodations, but will be retested with accommodations if necessary. Faith Lutheran reserves the right to decline accommodations that are inconsistent with the college preparatory nature of our program. Students whose 504 plan or IEP calls for extended time on tests will be given no more that 50% additional time to test. Students who receive a qualifying score may not retest. Only students in “guaranteed categories” will be offered one re-test if they do not receive a qualifying score.

All incoming students are interviewed by a Faith administrator or staff member prior to an admissions decision. The pre-interview questionnaire, as well as all other forms, must be completed prior to the interview.

Admissions Calendar

Registration for the following school year begins at the first Open House held in November. All returning students, their siblings, students from Association churches and feeder schools must be registered by January 31 in order to maintain their guaranteed status. On or about March 1, all guaranteed spots and 85% of the remaining available spots will be admitted. Students not admitted at that time will remain in the applicant pool. On or about May 1, the remaining 15% of available spaces will be allocated. Students will be admitted (or placed on the waiting list) based on a entrance test scores, a successful interview, date of application, and lottery, in that order.

Probationary Admissions

Consistent with our Christian faith, we believe that students who have made poor decisions in the past deserve the opportunity to get a fresh start in a new school environment. In some cases, students may be admitted to Faith on probation for academics, attendance, discipline or substance abuse. The conditions of probation will be explained at the time of admission, and depending upon the individual circumstances, may last up to one year of a student’s enrollment. Faith does not accept students expelled from other schools if they have violated the zero tolerance provisions of our school’s code of conduct.

Admission from Special Programs

Occasionally, students apply to Faith with non-traditional educational backgrounds. This may include home-schoolers as well as students attending schools that are therapeutic, recovery-based, or seek to modify behavior. All admission decisions regarding these students will be made on a case-by-case basis. However, in the cases where students come from specialized educational environments, parents must give full cooperation in helping Faith assess the likelihood of a successful transition to Faith. The school reserves the right to impose random drug testing regimens, mandatory after-care counseling or other measures designed to monitor a student’s progress.

Failure to Disclose

The admission of your student to Faith Lutheran begins a partnership between school and home. The goal of that partnership is to help students reach their full academic potential and develop a maturing relationship with God. The failure to disclose diagnosed learning disabilities or serious physical, mental or emotional problems or history of academic, attendance, discipline or substance abuse problems at the time of admission will result in the dismissal of the student from school.

Continuing Student Enrollment

Once students are enrolled at Faith we hope that they will remain until high school graduation. Returning students are guaranteed enrollment provided they meet all re-registration and payment deadlines. However, returning students are subject to a review of their continued enrollment if they have significant academic, attendance or discipline as explained in the student and parent handbooks.

International Students

Faith welcomes international students to become part of our campus.  Students from other countries provide a broadened cultural experience for our students.  When considering enrolling at Faith, international students should keep the following in mind:

  • Faith does not offer an ESL program.  Admitted students must have basic competency in the English language to be successful at their grade level.
  • Faith is a Lutheran, Christian school and participation in religion classes is required.  Attendance at chapel is mandatory.   Students with non-Christian religious backgrounds may find this an additional cultural barrier.
  • Students must be an appropriate age for their class level. No one will be admitted to 6th grade that has a 13th birthday earlier September 30 of his or her year of admission.  No one will be admitted to 9th grade that has a 16th birthday earlier than September 30 of his or her year of admission.  Entrance to all other grades follows a similar pattern.
  • Faith does not find housing for international students. International students are not eligible for financial aid.
  • Faith partners with World Experience Teenage Student Exchange Program and students from that program have priority admission over other international students.

Admissions Process for International Students

  • Students must complete the application form and pay the registration fee. International students are subject to the same deadlines, tuition and fees as local students.
  • When possible, students will take a SLEP test administered at Faith. There is a fee for this test.
  • If testing locally is not possible, students will be asked to produce a SLEP test score administered at a test center in their home country. The applicant is responsible for any fees.
  • If taking a SLEP test is still not possible, the applicant will be asked to sit for an interview conducted via the Internet (Skype, iChat, AOL). An informal assessment of the applicant’s English reading and comprehension will be part of that interview.  All international applicants must be interviewed prior to admission.
  • All applicants must provide a notarized statement naming a legal guardian for the international student.
  • Once an international student has been granted admission, Faith will issue an I-20.  No I-20 will be issued for students on a waiting list.
